What’s on

A seasonal round-up of the harbour year. For exact dates and times, always use the official listings we link to.

We don't run an events calendar. Dates move, events change hands, and an out-of-date listing is worse than none. Instead, here is the shape of a year on the harbour, with links to the people who publish the real dates.

Every week

The Lyttelton farmers' market runs on Saturday mornings on London Street, the town's main shopping street. It has been going since 2005 and is run on a not-for-profit basis, with local growers, bakers and food stalls and live music. It is the easiest way to see the town at its busiest.

Summer

Summer brings swimming in the bays, yachts racing on the harbour and walkers on the Summit Road. It is also the fire season on the Port Hills, when tracks and reserves can close at short notice in hot, dry, windy weather. The cruise season runs over the warmer months, and on ship days the town is noticeably busier.

Winter

Lyttelton marks midwinter with a festival of lights, traditionally a street party on London Street with a parade, music, stalls and fireworks over the harbour. On festival nights the main street is closed to traffic and parking is very limited, so the bus is the easier option. Dates are announced each year.

Through the year

Galleries, music venues and community groups around the harbour run their own programmes. The information centre and the regional visitor site are the best places to see what is on this week.
