Islay Cottage
Historic "Islay Cottage" was built in 1851 by Thomas Kent who arrived on the "Cressy", one of Canterbury's first four ships. In 1856 the cottage was purchased
by Dr John Seager Gundry 4 x Great uncle of one of todays owners. In the 1870's the Harbour Master, Hugh McLellan became the owner and gave her the name of
"Islay Cottage" after his homeland - the Isle of Islay, Scotland.
It remained in his family until 1965. While retaining many of its original features, the cottage has all of todays mod cons. It has been decorated to celebrate
New Zealand's heritage with a touch of England, Ireland and Scotland and also historical Lyttelton prints adorn the walls.

Sitting above the Lyttelton Port and at the bottom of the Bridal Path there are great bike rides and walks starting at the gate. A short walk down the hill takes you to the local cafes, bars and port for a cruise to Diamond Harbour or Quail Island. For those who do
not want to be energetic, bring a good book and just sit on the verandah or in the sunroom and enjoy the view and let the relaxing atmosphere take over. The Cottage is
a safe place for a girls weekend or a romantic break. Drive through the tunnel with your favourite person, wine and book and ENJOY.
