Welcome to Godley House
Godley House was built in 1880 by Harvey Hawkins as a family home. Mr Hawkins was one of Lyttelton's leading citizens as ship chandler, ironmonger and speculator. The land that Godley House is built on was purchased from Mark
Stoddart who lived with his family in what is now known as Stoddart's cottage. (You may wish to have a look at this lovely little cottage which is situated at the back of the rugby grounds).
The Hawkins home was a grand house for entertaining, and a jetty was built at the bottom of the hill so visitors could come across from Lyttelton. The good times did not last and by 1894 Hawkins was
bankrupt. The house and property reverted to the Stoddart family.
The Stoddart family lived in Godley House until 1913 when both houses were sold to the Lyttelton Borough Council, it was then that Godley House was given it's name.
